Rachael attended Hillcrest High School and recalls looking across the street at an empty field where Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel now stand. She got her first job at the Wendy’s on Fairview Road when it first opened back in the 90s. Since then, she’s gone on to get a Bachelor’s from Charleston Southern, a Master’s from Clemson, and various jobs that actually allowed her to use her English and Communication degrees. In 2018, an opportunity came along allowing her to start a magazine in the area where she grew up and to promote the fine business owners working there. That is how Simpsonville Neighbors was born.
Rachael enjoys volleyball, travel, wakeboarding, snowboarding, really anything sports or outdoors, Fantasy Football with her husband, bike rides with her son, snuggling with her dogs, dancing, continues to “cheer” for Clemson, and has been known to perform her signature rap song The Humpty Dance at karaoke bars around the world.
Sharmarra had always dreamed of being a writer. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, she moved across the country to pursue a Journalism degree at Howard University. Upon graduation, she landed a job as an editor at Fairchild Publications in New York City. Simultaneously, another opportunity arose: a campus ministry position at her church in Brooklyn. Wondering if this could also be a calling, she grappled with the decision and took the job. Since then, in a ministry career spanning nearly 30 years, Sharmarra has led campus, teen, single, and married ministries and currently serves as women’s ministry leader at the FirstRock Church in Greenville, SC. She edits the Five Forks Neighbors magazine and has a genealogy business. She also loves singing and playing piano. She and her husband Ronnie have been married for 25 years and have two children — Kaylen, a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina, and Stephen — a high school senior and aviation enthusiast.
Melissa is a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!), where she earned her Bachelor’s in Education with a minor in English. A lifelong lover of learning, language, and storytelling, Melissa spent seven years instilling those passions in her students as a 6th-grade English teacher before resigning in 2022 to focus on her thriving entrepreneurial ventures.
Her career transitioned seamlessly into the world of local media; she began as the Content Coordinator for Boiling Springs Living in 2023 and expanded her role to include Simpsonville Neighbors in 2025. In addition to her editorial work, Melissa is currently drafting a memoir about her survival following a parental abduction to the Alaskan backwoods from ages nine to thirteen, a narrative of resilience that has already garnered interest from HarperCollins.
When she isn’t curating stories for the community, Melissa manages her ten-year-old pet care business. What began as an extension of her love for animals grew exponentially in 2022 as many discovered a sudden need for care for their “COVID pets” upon returning to the brick-and-mortar office. Her family remains her greatest source of pride: her son, Samuel, who launched his own roofing company in April 2026; her daughter, Madalyn, a dedicated rancher and barrel racer; and her youngest, Leah, a high school sophomore with aspirations of becoming a professional baker.
To recharge, Melissa hits the gym four to five times a week. As time allows, she takes her two German Shepherds hiking through the Upstate’s scenic trails or for an afternoon of lunch and shopping in downtown Greenville. She enjoys running, baking, gardening, travel, and playing competitive chess. Whether she is tackling a new DIY project or deep-diving into psychological research, Melissa approaches every endeavor with the same tenacity and intellectual curiosity that defines her life and work.
